Originally established as Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC), ABB Turbocharging is the world’s leading supplier of turbochargers for diesel and gas engines in the 500 kW-plus power range.
Currently, more than 180,000 ABB turbochargers are in operation worldwide, on ships, in power stations, on locomotives and in heavy-duty construction and mining vehicles.
From filing the original turbocharger patent in 1905, ABB have paved the way for commercial use of turbochargers throughout history.
In the early 1990s ABB began to develop a new generation of more compact, lighter high-performance turbochargers as successors to the VTR, VTC and RR. Two new families emerged, the TPS for engine ratings from 500 to 3,000 kW, and the TPL for engine applications with outputs from 2,500 kW up to the highest in the market.

In 1996 the first of the new-generation TPL turbochargers, the TPL-A, was introduced to the market. This series was developed for modern medium-to-large four-stroke diesel / gas engines. Applications ranged from main and auxiliary engines for vessels to diesel and gas power plants such as the Wärtsilä 12V38 and Caterpillar MaK 16M32.
Due to increased demand for large ocean-going vessels, more powerful engines came under development which lead to the introduction of the TPL-B in 1999 for engines with 5,000 to 25,000 kW outputs.
